The 24–48 hour rule (do this first)
Before you visit the Illinois Secretary of State (ILSOS) - Driver Services, you must update Social Security and then wait 24–48 hours for their systems to sync. What to bring to the Illinois DMV
Bring the following to the Illinois Secretary of State (ILSOS) - Driver Services:
- Certified copy of marriage certificate (from the county clerk where married)
- Current Illinois driver's license or state ID
- Updated Social Security card reflecting the new name
- A second document linking the old and new name (e.g., passport, birth certificate) if not otherwise clear
- Proof of Illinois residency (two documents, e.g. utility bill/lease) if also completing a REAL ID upgrade
REAL ID note: Illinois law (625 ILCS 5/6-116(b), verified 2026-08) requires applying for a corrected license within 30 days of a legal name change (the 10-day rule in 6-116(a) is for address changes); must visit a Driver Services facility in person with ID linking old and new names. If upgrading to REAL ID at the same time, additional proof of SSN, IL residency (2 documents), and identity/lawful status is required.
Fees, timing & how to file
The Illinois fee to update your license is typically $5 for a corrected driver's license; $10 for a corrected state ID card. This change generally must be done in person. Mind the clock: Illinois asks you to update your license within 30 days of your legal name change, so don't park this step for later. The 30 days is the statute's window for applying for a corrected card after a legal name change (625 ILCS 5/6-116, which gives 10 days for a change of address). Illinois's own Secretary of State page says to notify it of an address or name change within 10 days, so to match the agency, do it within 10 days. The law: 625 ILCS 5/6-116(b).
