How we verify our information
Name-change rules are boring until they're wrong. Here's exactly how we keep 51 state datasets accurate, and what to do if you catch something we missed.
Official sources only
Every fee, document list, deadline, and link on our state pages comes from the official source: your state's licensing agency, vital records office, and election office, plus ssa.gov and travel.state.gov for the federal steps. We do not source facts from blogs, forums, or other name-change services.
Checked link by link, state by state
All 51 datasets (50 states plus DC) are verified individually: we confirm each government page is live and current, that the fee we quote matches the agency's published amount, and that voter deadlines match the Secretary of State's rule. 51 of 51 are fully verified right now.
Re-verified on a quarterly cycle
Government pages move and fees change quietly, so we re-run the full verification every quarter and after any known federal change (like a passport fee update). The most recent full pass finished in July 2026. Each state page shows its own verification date.
Corrections, fast
Spot something outdated? Email help@getnamewright.com and we'll check it against the official source and fix it, usually within a couple of days. When our guidance and an official government source ever disagree, the official source is right; use it.
