Privacy Policy

The short version

NameWright ("we") is operated by Handler Labs LLC. We collect the minimum needed to build your checklist and prepare your forms. We never ask for or store your Social Security number. We do not sell or share your personal information, we serve no third-party advertising, and we run no cross-site trackers. Our only measurement is cookieless, aggregate page analytics that cannot identify you. We use a small set of trusted providers (Stripe, Supabase, Vercel) to operate securely.

This policy applies to getnamewright.com and our related services. NameWright is intended for residents of the United States, and your information is stored and processed in the United States.

Information we collect

Using the categories from California's privacy law, we collect:

• Identifiers (an identifiers category): your email address, and an order reference if you buy. We collect your email when you purchase or opt in to save your checklist. If you opt in, we send a few helpful name-change emails; every one includes a one-click unsubscribe link.
• Checklist answers (commercial/preference information): your marriage or divorce situation, your state, your passport situation, and which kinds of accounts you hold. These generate your plan. They are stored in your browser and, if you purchase, associated with your order.
• Commercial information: the product tier you bought and the amount. Your card details go directly to Stripe; we never see or store them.
• Internet and network activity: basic, short-lived server logs, including your IP address, used to keep the service secure and rate-limited, plus cookieless, aggregate page analytics (Vercel Web Analytics: page views and anonymous, de-identified visit counts, with no cookies, no fingerprinting, and no cross-site tracking). We do not build advertising or behavioral profiles.
• Form details you enter: the names you type to pre-fill a government form are used in the moment to generate your PDF and are not saved on our servers.

We do notcollect precise geolocation, biometric data, or the categories of "sensitive personal information" used to infer characteristics about you.

Where the information comes from

Directly from you (your checklist answers, email, and the names you enter), and automatically from your device (log and security data such as your IP address). We do not buy personal information from data brokers.

How we use your information

• To generate your personalized checklist and prepare your documents.
• To deliver access to your kit and your order receipt.
• To provide customer support and improve the product.
• To keep the service secure, prevent fraud and abuse, and rate-limit requests.
• To comply with our legal, tax, and accounting obligations.

Social Security numbers

We do not ask for your Social Security number, and we never store it. The SS-5 and passport forms we prepare leave the SSN field blank for you to complete when you file. Please review any prepared document before you file it.

Cookies, tracking & "Do Not Track"

We use a single essential cookie (nw_order) to keep you signed in to your purchased kit. We store your checklist and progress in your browser's local storage, which stays on your device until you clear it. We use no advertising, analytics, or cross-site tracking cookies. Our page analytics (Vercel Web Analytics) is cookieless: it counts visits in aggregate without storing anything on your device or identifying you.

Do Not Track:because we do not track you across third-party websites or over time, our practices are the same whether or not your browser sends a "Do Not Track" (DNT) signal. We also do not allow third parties to collect personally identifiable information about your online activities across different websites when you use NameWright.

Who we share it with

We share data only with service providers who process it on our behalf and under contract: Stripe (payment processing), Supabase (our encrypted database), and Vercel(hosting and cookieless site analytics). We may also disclose information if required by law or to protect our rights, or in connection with a business transfer. We do not disclose your information for anyone else's independent marketing.

We do not sell or share your information

We do notsell your personal information, and we do not "share" it for cross-context behavioral advertising, as those terms are defined under the CCPA. We have not done so in the last 12 months. Because we do not sell or share, and because we do not use sensitive personal information beyond legally permitted purposes, we are not required to (and do not) post "Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information" or "Limit the Use of My Sensitive Personal Information" links.

How long we keep it

• Checklist & progress: kept in your browser until you clear it; we do not retain it on our servers unless it is tied to an order.
• Order records (email, tier, amount, Stripe reference): kept while your kit is active and afterward as needed to meet tax, accounting, and legal obligations, generally up to seven years.
• Email you opt in with: kept until you ask us to delete it or unsubscribe.
• Names for form pre-fill: not retained; used only in the moment to build your PDF.
• Security logs (including IP): kept briefly for security, then discarded.

Security

We use TLS encryption in transit and encryption at rest for the order data we retain, and we design to collect as little as possible. No system is perfectly secure, but minimizing what we hold is our first line of defense.

Your California privacy rights

If you are a California resident, the CCPA (as amended by the CPRA) gives you the right to:

• Know and access the personal information we have collected about you, its sources, and how we use and disclose it.
• Delete personal information we collected from you, subject to legal exceptions.
• Correct inaccurate personal information we maintain about you.
• Opt out of the sale or sharing of your personal information (we do not sell or share, so there is nothing to opt out of).
• Limit the use of sensitive personal information (we do not use sensitive information beyond permitted purposes).
• Not be discriminated or retaliated against for exercising any of these rights.

Other U.S. state privacy rights

If you are a resident of Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Utah, Texas, or another state with a comprehensive privacy law, you have similar rights to access, correct (except in Utah), delete, and obtain a portable copy of your personal data, and to opt out of targeted advertising, the sale of personal data, and profiling. As noted above, we do none of those last three. If we deny a rights request, you may appeal by replying to our decision; if we deny your appeal, you may contact your state Attorney General.

How to exercise your rights

Because we operate exclusively online and deal with you directly, we designate email as the way to submit requests. To protect your data, we will verify your request by matching the information you give us (such as the email on your order) before we act. You may use an authorized agent, who must provide proof that you authorized them.

Children's privacy

NameWright is a general-audience service for adults changing their names. It is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we learn that we have, we will delete it.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy. When we make material changes, we will post the updated policy here with a new "Last updated" date and, where appropriate, give additional notice (such as a banner on the site or an email if you have an order with us). We review this policy at least once every 12 months.
