Alaska DMV Name Change (Driver's License)

Before you visit the Alaska Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV), you must update Social Security and then wait 24–48 hours for their systems to sync. Most DMVs check your new name against SSA data electronically, so if you go too soon you can be rejected. Start with the free Alaska SS-5 step.

Bring the following to the Alaska Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV):

• Original certified marriage certificate (from Vital Statistics, not a photocopy or fax)
• Completed Form D1 (Application for Alaska Driver License, Permit or ID Card)
• Current Alaska driver license or ID card
• Payment for replacement credential fee
• Proof of Social Security number/legal presence documents if required for REAL ID

REAL ID note: Alaska law (AS 28.05.071) requires you to notify the DMV of a name change within 30 days, and the DMV's own page says to bring proof of the change in person at a DMV office. Name changes cannot be done online; complete Form D1, and may need to pass a vision test. A REAL ID-compliant credential requires additional proof of identity/residency documents.

The Alaska fee to update your license is typically $15 (standard) or $35 (REAL ID) duplicate. This change generally must be done in person.
