California Driver's License Name Change After Marriage

A California DMV name change is simple once the timing is right. Here's what to bring, plus the 24–48 hour Social Security sync that's the #1 reason people get sent home.

The 24–48 hour rule (do this first)

Before you visit the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), you must update Social Security and then wait 24–48 hours for their systems to sync. California verifies your new name against SSA data in real time, so if you go too soon you'll be rejected. Start with the free California SS-5 step.

What to bring to the California DMV

Bring the following to the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV):

  • Certified copy of marriage certificate showing new name
  • Updated Social Security card/record (change with SSA before visiting DMV)
  • Current California driver's license or ID card
  • Proof of true full name (marriage certificate suffices for non-REAL ID)
  • For REAL ID upgrade: proof of identity + SSN + two proofs of CA residency (e.g., utility bill, bank statement)

REAL ID note: For a REAL ID-compliant card you must also provide proof of identity, your Social Security Number, and two proofs of California residency; for a standard (non-REAL ID) card you need only provide proof of your true full name.

Fees, timing & how to file

The California fee to update your license is typically $37 license / $40 ID (change of info). This change generally must be done in person. You can confirm the current requirements on the official California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) page.
